What is a SMART Repair?
SMART Repair
Systems
Smart repairs
are a fast, simple and affordable way to repair vehicle damage. Because the
repairs are limited to the area affected, they take much less time and are
smaller. This has the real benefit of a huge reduction in cost. A SMART repair
may be as much as 80% cheaper than a traditional body shop. Another advantage
is the fact that many SMART repair specialists can offer a mobile service. This
means you won't have to worry about your vehicle being at the body shop while
it is being repaired.
SMART repairs
can be used to repair many types of vehicle damage, including bumper scratches
and interior tears as well as rips. The following article will explain what
types of repairs are possible and how to restore your vehicle to pre-accident
condition Paint Repair.
Paintwork and
bumper repairs
The most common
type of vehicle repair is paintwork damage. Most cars require some TLC during
their lifetime, as the paintwork is often the first point of contact for any
accident.
You can polish
minor scratches with a fine grade of Wet-and-Dry paper. This will remove the
lacquer layer and even out the finish. To restore the original shine, a fine
Rubbing Compound can be applied after the paintwork has been removed
sufficiently to remove the scratch. The job is completed with a final coat of
Car Polish. You must take great care when repairing damaged areas. It is easy
to rub the paintwork all the way to the base coat, resulting in a respray.
A localised
paint repair will be necessary for more serious damage. First, the SMART
technician will determine the vehicle's colour code and then apply a small
amount of paint to the area. The damaged area will need to be cut in the same
way as before, but this time we are able to use more force to repair the
damage. To restore the original shape of the area, a combination panel filler
and dent removal will be required if cracks or dents are evident. After the
area has been prepared, the colour is applied. Next comes a top coat with
lacquer. Finally, a fade-out lacquer is applied which blends the restored
lacquer into the original bodywork.
Alloy Wheel
Repair
Alloy wheels can
often be scuffed along the curb edge, causing unsightly damage. We can use a
SMART repair to remove the damaged areas and blend them back in. The wheel may
need to be painted to restore its original colour.
A SMART repair
can also take care of corrosion of alloy wheels. To remove corrosion from a
wheel, it will need to be completely cleaned. You can do this by grinding and
sanding, but Sandblasting is recommended for best results. After all corroded
elements have been removed, the wheel can be recolored and lacquered to restore
its original appearance.
Interior Damage
Interior damage
can take many forms, from Cigarette burns in upholstery to Mobile Phone Cradles
that leave mounting holes in the dash.
Mixing a mixture
of fibre powders in different colours can be used to repair upholstery. This
will create an interior trim that matches the original colour. First, any
damaged areas such as cigarette burns will be removed completely from the seat.
The rest of the hole will be filled with packing material to restore it to its
original level. To seal the repair, a top layer is added to the cloth. The
fibres are then coated with a setting spray and glued in place. This repair is
almost invisible.
Interior and
dashboard plastic repairs can be done in the same manner as exterior repairs,
but the coating may be thicker than the outer paintwork. Texturisation is
possible to recreate the original finish.
